The Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, and his wife, Mrs Feyisola Abiru commissioned a rehabilitated two-storey blocks of classrooms, facilitated at his alma mater, Government College Lagos, Eric Moore, Surulere, to improve the learning outcome and promote academic excellence.
The projects, commissioned on Monday, were equipped with new furniture, upgraded toilets and a functional water supply system supported by a borehole and a 2,500-gallon tank. The classrooms were increased from 15 to 20 to help limit class sizes to 50 students.
Abiru, who attended the school between 1975 and 1981, said the intervention was a personal homecoming. He recalled previous support for the school hall, administrative building and a STEM laboratory equipped with high-speed internet and solar power.
He stressed that improved infrastructure must translate into better academic outcomes, expressing concern that the school’s overall performance in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination fell below 50 per cent. He however, pledged to reward teachers if WAEC results improved significantly, and also pledged cash reward for outstanding students in WAEC.
Abiru urged the school management and relevant authorities to strengthen teaching and supervision, while charging students to embrace discipline and hard work.
The senator commended the administration of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for its emphasis on human capital development and sustainable development, and also the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals, Her Excellency Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, for executing the intervention, stressing the need for sustained collaboration to improve public education.

He also expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Education District IV, the school management, the Government College Lagos Old Boys Association, teachers and other stakeholders for their continued support.

He said the true measure of the investment would be the quality of students produced and their academic achievements, urging the school community to maintain the facilities and restore the institution’s tradition of excellence.
